Where Is The News Coverage?

I tried something out today: A Google search for islamist, jihadist or islamofascism. There were almost 14,000 references to these words in the news, and many of those items concerned known terrorist activities in other parts of the world.

Not surprisingly, I had a hard time seeing major news organizations in the search results. The big newspapers, the syndicated news services, the mainstream press…all having a hard time reporting on the matter of sworn enemies who are out to kill us and destroy our country.

Then I searched for “Britney Spears.”

You know where this is going, right?

Yes, in our news media there were more than 26,000 recent news items about the self-destructive singer. Almost double the coverage for an entertainment figure with tremeendous personal struggles.

Why is this? Several reasons to point to, I think, and I’ll address a few of them in days to come.

This is an important thing to grasp. Our future is at stake, the world our children will inherit is at great risk, and there is more attention devoted to celebrity gossip than to the pending disaster facing our families. What are we to do?

Michael Youssef speaks plainly about the mindset and theology of extremists who are striving to threaten our nation, our present and our future. If you care about your family, listen in.

We are a rubbernecking culture craning our necks to see a mangled, disgusting mess. We want our stomachs to turn so that we can point and then (gasp) laugh.

I’ve begun to wonder if Brittany now pulls stunts on purpose so that we will notice her.

Meanwhile, in another part of the kingdom, we remain virtually ignorant to the Bible. I just read again today how many people attribute to Jesus the phrase, “God helps those who help themselves.” (Benjamin Franklin)

May we find the passion to learn from men like Youssef, communicate the truth wrapped in stories like a Miller or Bell, and love harder so that the world can change.
