The United Nations General Assembly approved and sponsored the first World Autism Day. There are many organizations and companies helping promote this day, designed to heighten awareness of the disorder.
Here are some “first links” you might want to check out if you’d like to learn more about autism.
- Autism Society of America - I’m a member of their Colorado chapter
- Autism Speaks - an organization dedicated to education about autism, this link shows various Awareness Day activites
- The Center For Disease Control and Prevention - this is their main page about autism
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services - this page offers a number of important links
- Facing Autism - a book by Lynn Hamilton. With this helpful resource, you’ll discover how to begin battling for your child right away, evaluate the latest treatments available and keep your family together even when it feels like your world is falling apart.

John, it’s great that you have Facing Autism by Lynn Hamilton shown above. I actually got to meet her last weekend at a DAN Conference. She gave us good counsel and ministered to my wife.
I do request though that along with ASA and Autism Speaks, that you also list Autism Research Institute (ARI) which was founded by Bernard Rimland, the father of Autism Research. If it weren’t for him, the medical/psych fields would still be blaming the mothers by calling them “refrigerator moms” like they did back in the 60’s.
While Autism Speaks (a very good org.) is a recent newcomer, ARI has been the forefront of biomedical research and many many kids have been recovered. Please consider this fact and show ARI’s link along with the rest shown here.
