Wonderful Christmas Radio Drama

You need to slow down, so grab a cup or coffee or tea and spend a few minutes listening to this superb adaptation of a Leo Tolstoy story. Great stuff!

Favorite Christmas Movies?

We’ve seen only one “holiday” movie so far, but I’m hoping we can dust off some old VHS tapes and watch a few more on the 25th. Here are some annual favorites in our home…well, at least they are some of my own personal faves:

I’ll admit that my most beloved Christmas movie, because of the innocence and spiritual emphasis of it, is…

I’d enjoy hearing about your picks!

Did You Spend Too Much?

Our approach to Christmas presents is rather modest, as we try to emphasize the spiritual nature of the holiday. So my wife and I avoid big-ticket items and try to watch the number of gifts our children will be opening on December 25th. So when I saw this piece about being frugal this time of year (and really, ALL year ’round), I read it with great interest.

Can you really be “too cheap?”

After reading the article, do you think you spent too much this season?

Technological Improvements

Hats off to Dan, who helps me with the design and functionality of this blog. He’s made two changes worth noting here:

  1. This blog shows up nicely on a mobile device. None of that “squint-to-see-the-tiny-font” stuff here.
  2. Twitter feeds. I’m starting to enjoy this tool, and have had some good feedback about the short status updates (see the “Right now I am…” section in the upper right hand corner of the blog.

We’re mobile friendly. Feels good!

Forums Offer Marriage and Parenting Advice

For over 31 years people have come to Focus on the Family for trusted, relevant, biblical advice. For almost two years we’ve been engaging with people through online forums. You might be interested to know that since their inception in February 2007, the Parenting Forum and Marriage Forums have had:

If you’ve relied on Dr. Dobson’s highly practical help, we think you’ll find these forums to be of great interest. They are safe, moderated and offer a caring community where you can share. Stop by sometime!

Newsweek’s Distortions

The recent Newsweek cover story about the supposed biblical arguments for same-sex marriage is both ludicrous and offensive. Focus on the Family board member Dr. Al Mohler offers a stinging rebuke of the magazine’s assertions:

“Let’s face it, what the sum and substance of this cover story really attempts to do is to say that Christians have basically been wrong for the better part of 20 centuries in understanding the Scripture and that the vast majority of believers in this country are wrong in believing that same-sex marriage is prohibited by scriptural injunction,” Mohler said.

If you agree that this is an affront to biblical Christianity, and if you subscribe to Newsweek, I hope you’ll cancel your subscription and send a letter to the editor explaining why.

Here’s an article with more from Dr. Mohler.

Encouragement for the fight

Cancer doesn’t respect rank or race, or gender or age. If you or someone you know has been visited by this disease, let me point you to a more encouraging article written by Dr. David Jeremiah. He was on the Focus on the Family radio program speaking about his 7-year battle with lymphoma. You can read the article on the radio page from that broadcast by clicking here.

Wanted: Advice For An Expectant Dad

The other day a co-worker announced some good news: he and his wife are expecting their first child in about six months. It was great to share in his joy, and I immediately thought back 21 years ago when we were in about the same place. Goodness, what I didn’t know about parenting then! I’m no expert now, of course, but I have had lots of experience as a Dad.

As I shared from my own successes and failures with Patrick, it occurred to me that there are probably some good suggestions readers of this blog could offer him. I’d like to hear from you: what advice would you tell this “expectant” Dad?

Leave a comment with your suggestions.

And read this advice to Dads from Dr. Bill Maier – something every father should know about his unique role in his child’s life.

The Financial Costs of Autism

I’ve been rather candid with friends and family members about the joys and challenges we’ve experienced raising our son who has autism. He is a precious boy, and we really, really love him. I just can’t imagine life without him!

One thing many folks don’t understand is the financial aspect of having a special needs child. Here’s an article from U.S. News and World Report that touches on some of the unique money problems associated with parenting a child with autism. Pretty interesting.

Program Leads To Adoption

This comment by Melissa illustrates the power of our programming to touch lives! It was in response to one of our more memorable moments in the studio this year:

Several months ago I listened to  a broadcast interview with Gene Stallings, football coach with a son with Down Syndrome. This interview touched  me so much that my husband and I are now in the process of adopting a 4 year-old boy in Eastern Europe with Down Syndrome!  Thank you, Gene and Dr. Dobson! Your interview MADE A DIFFERENCE.

I’m so glad to know that this family will be welcoming a little boy into their loving home! Join me in praying for them, that God prepares hearts and paves the way for this adoption.
