Twisted Logic

The mental and moral gymnastics in this brief interchange, are hard to understand. That is some pretty twisted logic to justify controversial government expenditures.

Unintended Consequence

Listening to Dr. Dobson’s daily broadcast does have some advantages, although this is an unintended benefit (true story as submitted by a listener!):

“I listen to the radio on my way to work, but I usually don’t tune in to your program.  Recently, however, someone borrowed my car and changed the station.  I didn’t really notice I was listening to the Focus broadcast until Mrs. Dobson was getting ready to pray, at which point she asked folks to stop what they were doing if possible and join her in prayer.  I was traveling at the time and felt compelled to pull over, in spite of the fact that I never do this while driving on the highway.  As soon as I stopped on the side of the road, the car in front of me was involved in a horrendous roll-over accident. I’m convinced that had I continued driving, I likely would have been in the middle of that crash.  I’m so thankful that God intervened and protected me through Mrs. Dobson’s simple request.”

We’re glad the listener stopped to pray, and trust they were able to pray for and assist the car involved in the accident.

Maybe you have a story to tell?

Digital TV: Less Than A Month

If, like me, you have an old television, and if, like me, you don’t have cable or satellite service, you need to know that “change is a comin.’” From a government site:

You will need to take action before February 17, 2009 if you currently watch TV on an analog TV set that is not connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service.

At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.

My experience: We don’t watch much TV, but I decided to buy a converter so we could have the option in the future. I’m pleased with the ease of installation, and the resulting picture quality is significantly improved. We also now have a few more channels we can access. All in all, this was a pretty simple move. Check out that above website for more details.

Johnny’s Life

Did you know that 9 of 10 of pre-born children who are diagnosed with Downs Syndrome are aborted? How awful! That is a tragic statistic – and a terrible reflection of our society’s values. Certainly for some the decision is very painful, but have we really gotten to the point where we as a culture think it is best to destroy a human being because of a disability? This reflects the “quality of life” argument that Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everret Koop warned about in their seminal work, Whatever Happened to the Human Race.

If you ever needed to know just how a special needs individual can touch lives, here’s a warm and inspirational story that will bring tears to your eyes. Johnny Stallings lived an exceptional life…and his father’s tender recollection of his many wonderful qualities is a vivid and powerful reminder about the value of every person.

As a Dad, I held back the emotions during the update with Coach Stallings, grateful for his stand for life, and mindful of the precious children God has given me.

A Prayer For President Obama

In the New Testament, Paul instructs Timothy to teach believers to pray for “rulers and all who have authority” and to be faithful in praying “so that we can have quiet and peaceful lives full of worship and respect for God.”

Dr. Al Mohler has posted a prayer for President Obama at his blog.

As Barack Obama prepares to take the oath of office and become the 44th President of the United States, Christians should be thinking about how to pray for the new President.  I offer this prayer as a place to start, as we observe the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States together.

There’s a lot to pray for and about in the coming days. I think we’d do well to follow Dr. Mohler’s lead and build on this prayer.

Pro-Life Rationale: SLED

Pro-life advocate Scott Klusendorf suggests the “SLED” acronym to help you remember several key arguments in defending your pro-life beliefs (click here for the details). This is really good stuff.

Parenting Forum: The Special Needs Child

There’s a parenting forum event on  January 21, 3-5pm (EST). I’ll be hosting the conversation about the unique challenges and joys that those of us with special needs children experience.

Joining me will be Bob West, the president and founder of Need Project Inc. a non-profit ministry dedicated to supporting families with special needs children and adults; and Dr. Walt Larimore, along with his wife Barb and their daughter Kate.

Details here. Plan now to participate, and please help spread the word!

Historic Inauguration

Watching the inauguration events, particularly the “swearing in” ceremony, has brought a tear to my eyes. America is an exceptional country, in so many ways, and the historic nature of this day cannot be overstated. The proceedings represent deeper and different meanings to each person watching. Let me offer a couple of suggestions about how to better appreciate all that is going on, and all that is ahead of this President, and this country.

Here’s a very good column by Peggy Noonan about the day’s significance, and how we might properly think of what is transpiring. There is something very special about this moment in time, regardless of your politics or convictions.

As I write this, Barack Obama has just taken his oath of office and is now our 44th President. He is stepping onto the world stage at a challenging moment, and there are difficult days and choices ahead. I am called by God to pray for him and will do so faithfully. Why don’t you consider joining thousands of others who daily pray for the President and his cabinet?

Justice, Martin Luther King and David

From an article by Penny Hunter, a reflection about justice and those who seek it. Here are two powerful quotes:

As long as people are in slavery and injustice runs rampant, if I remain silent, then my world is a self-absorbed existence. As Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Today in the U.S. we recognized the special contribution made by Dr. Martin Luther King to our society. The chief spokesman for the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law, Dr. King assassinated in 1968. His brave, non-violent crusade against racism and injustice brought about many of the changes that led to tomorrow’s historic inauguration of our country’s first African American President. Our prayers are with Barack Obama as he assumes the leadership for this great land, that in the coming days he would lead with an eye toward justice – for all.

As a people, we would do well to recognize Dr. King’s rhetoric and his legacy. His principles call to mind a quote from another great leader, King David:

“Blessed are they who maintain justice, who constantly do what is right” (Psalm 106:3).
