Monday Musing: Best Careers?

While most of my children are still a ways off from entering the work force, its important for me as their parent to help guide them in their future vocations. So I’m starting to think about the nature of work, and what it is that makes for a good job.
There are many factors to consider when choosing a career, like satisfaction, calling, gifts, abilities, experience, financial compensation, schedule, and more. How does one determine the best “fit” when it comes to a job? There have been may books written about this quest from a spiritual perspective, and others offer a more pragmatic view.
Here’s some research that examines some of these aspects of work. A team at Harvard is engaged in a longitudinal study of that school’s graduates, and has found out some fascinating things. Among their observations: women who enter the field of finance often pay a heavy price when they take time off to have and/or raise their children. To learn more, and to see what occupations tend to penalize working women least, read the research report.
And, readers, what advice do you have for fellow parents with regard to helping our children pick the best careers? Add to the conversation and leave a comment below.
