Seeing God In Autism

During National Autism Awareness Month, it is a privilege to have an article about our journey with autism featured in the Washington Post’s blog, Guest Voices. While I recount some of the painful, even disorienting steps we’ve taken along the way, there are some rich moments and lessons:

I’ll admit that while it is with some reluctance that I’ve embraced our status as a special needs family, God has used our precious boy in many profound ways. The lessons have been difficult, but the rewards have been far greater.

I hope you’ll read the full article here.

Also, keep an eye out at for families with special needs…we need some extra grace and patience…as we learn those lessons God has for us. Thanks.

Hello, Brother Fuller. I hope you don’t think I’m stalking you… I had tried to contact you via the Focus on the Family website and they suggested that I try you on Facebook and here. I just wanted to thank you for sharing this story with the world. I felt like you were telling our story, since we’ve just gone through the exact process with our only son a little over 2 years ago. Like you, I thought I’d be prepared since I am an OT who specializes in working with kids on the autism spectrum… done it for over 15 years. But nothing could prepare us when ASD came knocking on our door… and moved in! Once we came out of the ‘shell shock’ I felt called by God to do two things: 1) to start a ministry at my church to allow our 6 kids with ASD to be included in the regular children’s ministry (using my skills as an OT who’s worked in inclusion for over a decade); and 2) start a blog for Christian families touched by ASD. It is just a site to share information (no judgements, no criticisms, no talk of vaccines or diets or supplements)… just to share God’s love, peace and hope for this puzzling journey. I’d be honored if you’d take a look. I re-posted this very story from The Washington Post on my blog (all credit given, of course!). God bless you and your family!
